David Whiteley – BiographyDavid has spent the last 26 years in TV and radio, broadcasting, producing, directing and making top quality, award winning films. David is a main presenter at ITV News, co-hosting the nightly evening news for the East of England in the Anglia region, with Becky Jago. He spent 23 years at the BBC presenting the BBC One Current Affairs Programme 'Inside Out'. He has also presented and produced films for 'The One Show' (BBC ONE), The Victoria Derbyshire programme (BBC TWO) and fronted/produced documentaries for BBC FOUR, BBC WORLD and BBC ARTS. On top of that he has also presented hundreds of hours of live TV. Born on May the Fourth (Yes, Star Wars day!), 1977 (the year Star Wars was released), he was destined to be a life-long fan of the movies. Having hit upon the idea of making a documentary about the Brits behind Star Wars, he embarked on, what would become a four-year project to tell their stories. Firstly in 2017, with an hour long film, 'The Galaxy Britain Built' broadcast on BBC FOUR and BBC WORLD and then extending that to a 90 minute feature in 2019. David has also written a book, The Galaxy Britain Built: The British Talent Behind Star Wars. (Published by U.S. publisher, BearManor Media). In 2019, he also made a 30-minute featurette about Palitoy Star Wars Toys and the phenomenon in Britain, 'Toy Empire.' Both Star Wars documentaries received widespread critical acclaim as well as Royal Television Society Awards (Programme of the Year and Post-Production). David also works as a media consultant and trainer with many UK and global brands including Marks and Spencer, Mini Cooper, Anglian Water, Gardline Marine Surveys, CEFAS and Bernard Matthews. He can offer bespoke training as well as corporate advice and filmmaking.David is an experienced and regular host of prestigious industry awards ceremonies around the UK. Clients include LABC, NORSE, The Kingsley Group and Archant Media. He can entertain a room of hundreds of people and ensure a good night is had by all. In his spare time (not much of it!) he runs and also surfs in the North Sea, all year round, yes, even in the winter!

Coalville in Leicestershire was the home of toymakers, Palitoy. Already successful with ranges such as Action Man and Tiny Tears, the next brand would propel them into hyperspace! The makers of ‘The Galaxy Britain Built: The Force Behind Star Wars’, bring you the story of the toy designers and factory workers, tasked with filling the toyshop shelves of the UK. Palitoy's sister company in the U.S. – Kenner had landed the licence from LucasFilm. Palitoy would make, assemble and, thanks to their ingenuity, even redesign some of the toys. But most toys connected with movies did not traditionally do very well and if a film flopped, retailers and manufacturers were left with a load of stock they could not shift. The marketing team at Palitoy had quite a task convincing the trade to take it. The BBC documentary includes previously unheard stories from the people who made one of the most successful movies of all time, with additional interviews and previously unseen behind-the-scenes footage. Presenter; Star Wars super fan David Whiteley, who has his own connection to the original film (he was born on May 4th) - tracks down the often-modest British talent who brought the galaxy to life. In this feature length edition, David explores the contribution of the London Symphony Orchestra and meets Ann Skinner, who was in charge of continuity. As well as seeing her incredible continuity stills from the set, Ann reveals how she helped Sir Alec Guinness with one of the most famous speeches in Star Wars. In the Director’s cut we also delve into the previously unused sections of interviews, such as the set decorator’s efforts to make all of the science fiction weapons, including Han Solo’s blaster and the firearms of the Stormtroopers. The film is 90 minutes long – a must for Star Wars fans and is in memory of Star Wars Producer, Gary Kurtz and Costume Designer, John Mollo, who passed away since the production ended.
