About David Yang

I am an innovative and curious young thinker, ambitious to make a positive impact to those across the globe and in outer space. At the University of Oxford, I am pursuing a DPhil in Engineering Science. Broadly speaking, my research involves using X-rays to probe defects in metals, with the aim of creating a better understanding between crystalline structure and material performance. Eventually I would like to research high performance materials for demanding environments, with the overall goal of creating a more sustainable future.I am consistently seeking to expand my knowledge, as I firmly believe that it is the foundation of human achievement. I have an underlying interest and appreciation in social science and philosophy because these fields give a macroscopic perspective of our civilization—allowing us to be cognizant of the problems that exist and potentially learn how to move forward with them. When I am not engaged in any of the above interests, I can be found at the gym, rowing, and doing food challenges. Feel free to get in touch through LinkedIn!

Uc Berkeley College Of Engineering Aug 2017 - Dec 2017
    Berkeley, Ca
Marked homework and exams for MSE 45, an introductory class for materials science and engineering.
  • Osisoft
    It Project Manager Intern
    Osisoft May 2017 - Aug 2017
    San Leandro, California
I was introduced to two project management methodologies--Scrum and Kanban--and managed a project using each method. I served as a Scrum Master for PI Developers Club's second release (a subscription-based website), facilitating daily stand-up, backlog refinement and task breakdown meetings. Kanban was used for Microsoft CRM enhancements, where I also facilitated weekly Kanban board update meetings with CRM developers. To document the process of becoming a new project manager, I created a project management transition process for future new project managers. As a side project, I successfully planned an intern lunch outing for about 40 interns.
  • Osisoft
    Customer Support Engineer Intern
    Osisoft May 2016 - Aug 2016
    San Leandro, California
Coming in with no web design experience, I was able to create a Web App for the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART). For the back-end, I created a console application in C# to create .txt files from the BART API. These files were read by an interface and put into a PI Server in the form of PI points. Using PI Asset Framework, these PI points were organized into train elements. with the PI Web API, I was able to use these elements for my front-end, which consisted of Typescript with and Angular2 framework, HTML and CSS. Although there are still improvements to be made and bugs to be fixed, I feel like I have accomplished a lot in my three months.
  • Berkeley Air Monitoring Group
    Data Analyst Intern
Berkeley Air Monitoring Group Sep 2015 - May 2016
    Berkeley, California
As an intern, I measured black carbon concentrations using a transmissometer and uploaded the data into a database. I also updated the formulas to calculate the concentrations of the filters. Outside of data manipulation, I updated and tested firmware on new air quality measuring devices and reviewed and edited consulting reports that dealt with foreign household cook stoves. Furthermore, I updated firmware on the new PATS+ air quality monitoring devices and constructed calibration boxes for them.
  • Henkel
    Materials Intern
    Henkel May 2015 - Aug 2015
    Bay Point, California
I interned in the Materials Management group at Henkel Adhesive Technologies - Aerospace. Over the summer, I wrote a VBA program to assign unallocated inventory in the warehouse—either ship them to be down packed, relabel them, allocate them or send them to the marketing department to generate sales. I created another VBA program that was used to generate a report of late orders for supply chain planners, which became permanently implemented in the department. Outside of programming, I completed an A3 problem solving project to fix incomplete film production runs, thereby reducing backlog orders. Furthermore, I learned how to use SAP (P62—Production Logistics) to extract and provide information throughout the plant and went through mandatory safety training in the production facilities.
  • University Of Toronto
Summer Research Intern At Centre For Advanced Nanotechnology
University Of Toronto Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
    Toronto, Ontario
My project was the optimization of exposure time, LOR bake time and LOR bake temperature in the bilayer photolithography process, a technique used in microfabrication of semiconductors. The goal was to find the best conditions that would yield a pattern with the smallest fine features possible, which would give rise to the possibility of creating smaller nano devices. Specifically, these patterns were being made for a nano gas sensor that specifically detects carbon dioxide and methane. In the end, a process that produces 3µm fine features was achieved. However, if given more time, the procedure would be refined to make it more repeatable.
  • Three Dot Labs
Co Founder And Vice President Of Finance
Three Dot Labs Nov 2012 - May 2013
    Toronto, Ontario
Three Dot Labs was a high school student operated social enterprise that strived to connect the customer to the company and to the community. The products, which were movie gift packages and Valentines Day candy jars, were sold to create an unforgettable carnival experience for underprivileged youth in the Thorncliffe neighbourhood of Toronto. From establishment to liquidation, Three Dot Labs was a Junior Achievement Company, sponsored by Deloitte.Specifically, my responsibilities included preparing monthly incoming statements and balance sheets. My daily tasks included bookkeeping, such as keeping track of all the accounts payables, accounts receivables, assets, revenues, expenses and shares. I was also constantly looking for ways to minimize costs, which included finding cheaper raw materials and cheques.
