In early 2017 i decided to invest ~50% of my savings high risk: cryptocurrency. Talk about being at the right place, at the right time. Together with a couple of friends, we built a crypto index tracker that balanced a basket of the top 20 crypto's. We set up a fund so we could let people in our network invest. In the 2017 crypto boom our index went through the roof, 10x within a few months. Then it all came crashing down again in early 2018. The fund was mostly dormant since then. with little interest from new investors. In November 2020, just before the next bull run really kicked off, i made probably the worst financial decision of my life: we shut down the fund 😫

Together with my former Rocket colleague (and good friend) Alex Keil, I started Weissmaler. Finding a painter in Germany was a hassle, so we started a company to change that. We built tools to get a direct quote online and matched your job to the best painter in your area.We scaled fast, serving hundreds of clients within months. We raised three seed rounds and hired 30 people within a year. Perhaps we went too fast: the business did not make it in the end.

"Would you like to go to Asia and build a startup?" was the question that led me to join Rocket Internet. My role was to be the first boots on the ground for new ventures. I set up a real estate platform in Bangladesh, a book-a-cleaner platform in Singapore and an eCommerce marketplace in Myanmar. This was (obviously) the craziest time of my life.

After grad school I joined Booz & Company, one of the top strategy consultant firms at that time. It was my first full-time job and it gave me a fast-track into the corporate world. I learned that working in and with large companies wasn't for me, but i still use the skills that i picked up here almost every day.
