About Davis Cole

Very likely to be smiling :)A self-defined generalist, I'm someone who considers anything and everything to be interesting, a point which I think is proved by the amount of specialization in today's world, and a philosophy that was shaped by my upbringing. My childhood was filled with various activities; sports, concert band, chorus, spelling and geography bees, chess club, and helping at home; splitting wood, landscaping, sealing the driveway, and much more. As I grew, I took an interest to personal computing and tech, becoming familiar with home networking and serving as my family's de facto IT guy, and building my first custom PC and mechanical keyboard during high school. These interests molded me into a tech enthusiast, being able to remember spec sheets for obscure Android devices, putting together concept PC builds on pcpartpicker.com, and staying up to date with the latest hardware. While my tinkering gave me a strong set of practical skills, I find that it lacked purpose and a sense of direction. Upon graduation, I enrolled in UNH's mechanical engineering program on the basis that I was good at science and math. I do not regret my degree choice, as I find ME to be the most general engineering discipline, but I realize that my interests aligned more with electrical and computer engineering. Despite my interests, I wasn't introduced to computer programming until my sophomore year in college, which may have limited my perspective in choosing my degree.Things came full circle in my junior year, when I took a computational fluid dynamics course that exposed me to OpenFOAM. This toolbox bridged my interests in computing and mechanical engineering. I was able to apply my knowledge as an intern at DEKA R&D, where I was exposed to the Unix environment and CLI programs, a style of computing that was contrary to my previous understanding of the Windows environment and GUI programs.I stayed familiar with computer aided engineering tools, which led to a position with Ansys as a test engineer for the Fluent CFD package. This role gave me experience in managing many types of Linux and Windows servers, full stack development with Django, automation using CI/CD platforms like Azure DevOps, and developing internal tools to simplify workflows. I leaned into this fully, reading Hacker News and tech forums daily, and building a homelab to host personal services and deploy new ones that I learned from said forums. Now I find myself at a crossroads between mechanical and software engineering. I intend to obtain a graduate degree to better integrate the two.

Listed skills include Solidworks, Leadership, Matlab, Industrial Engineering, and 17 others.
