Growing up, I, like many others had dreams of doing a wide variety of things. Throughout high school I'd jump from interest to interest, first a lawyer, then a nurse, then maybe I'll work as a coder, or find my fortune in stocks. However, I ended up at a cross roads between Music and something I recently delved into, HR. While HR wouldn't be my first choice, it was the more sound choice. I spent the night before my orientation at UH a anxious ball of uncertainty not knowing whether my decision was the right one.4 years and a degree later, I couldn't have made a better decision. HR and its expansive career options and skill set really opened my eyes to the importance of HR in any company. When you have a good and well running HR department, you can sometime not feel it, because everything is running smoothly, turnover rates low, efficiency and happiness at an all time high. However, when an HR department is running less than optimal and even bad, and over time it can even turn combative, and worst of all they may forget one of the most important aspects of HR the Human aspect.Which is why working at 18 and Beyond has been one of the best introductions into an actual HR experience I could have. Working alongside people that help to support those with special needs and really making an impact to their lives and helping them has been the most fulfilling work I've done. It made me understand more deeply the importance of open communication and honesty to one another and helped me apply my knowledge in more ways than one.
