About Davis Evans

Davis Evans is a Graduate Research Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He possess expertise in piano, matlab, music education, microsoft office, organ and 11 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "I have known Davis for three years in my capacity as an associate professor in the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State University. Davis took one undergraduate level and two graduate level courses with me and based on his grades, attendance and class participation, I rate his academic performance in my classes as exceptional. His written assignments and exams showed not only a deep understanding of the presented material but also strong organization, communication, and presentation skills. In spring 2015 Davis graduated at the top of his undergraduate class of Engineering Science and Mechanics and I had the honor to be his commencement marshal at his graduation ceremony. Davis is a serious, mature student with a diverse and very strong background in mathematics and engineering science, as well as a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards learning. I have been his co-advisor for both his Bachelor’s thesis which he successfully defended in Spring 2015 as well as for his Master’s thesis. Davis' research involves developing a mechano-hydraulic model of intracranial pressure (ICP) dynamics and performing a very detailed bifurcation analysis of the model with the aim of finding critical transitions to oscillatory behavior. Critical transitions of ICP can predict ICP instabilities known to contribute to brain’s damage following traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and thus such information has the potential to revolutionize the current medical treatment of TBI. So far his research has generated two publications in conference proceedings. Davis is among the very few exceptionally gifted students whose intellect, creativity, background, commitment and work conduct will make him a very successful engineer or academic. If you have any further questions with regard to his background or qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me."

We are developing new mathematical models of intracranial pressure ( ICP ) dynamics; these attempt to describe the natural mechanisms in the human brain than control its own pressure. Since high ICP is a dangerous condition to patients, accurate math models could help improve treatments and medical devices. We are interested in developing models that are built from first-principles physics and that can describe the bifurcation to an unhealthy state known as plateau waves. In particular, we believe that piecewise systems can describe the transition between such states in an elegant way. I've written custom codes in MATLAB and Python to solve these hybrid dynamical systems.

I developed mathematical models to help the design of an aircraft landing gear load sensor. These models were derived from basic engineering principles of heat transfer and linear elasticity. To validate these, I designed and carried out experiments in the laboratory to measure the thermal and elastic properties, and then ultimately compared them to the predictions from the math model. I also developed custom C code for a microcontroller embedded in this sensor, so that loads could be measured and interpreted by a computer.
