Mechanical Engineering Intern

Plato, Minnesota, United States

While working at Crown Doors, a majority of my time went towards creating/revising 2D CAD models for customers using DaftSight and making cut lists for the metal shop to know what size beams were needed for each door. Each door is custom and can have varying electrical accessories so another part of my job would be programming IDEC smart relays for some unique doors. A few other tasks that I was able to complete during my internship at Crown Doors LLC. were updating standard drawings for each type of door, updating wiring diagrams for the electronic systems, and creating processing packets on how to build the most common door types. These processing packets went into detail on the welders' techniques they learned while making the doors and making these involved a lot of communication with the shop welders. A big project that I had during my internship was converting one of the types of doors that we made from hydraulic to electric using electric actuators. This involved researching electric actuators while communicating with providers, creating a 3D CAD model in Solidworks, and creating a 2D CAD model for the shop to build which was later tested after I returned to school. A few other tasks that I had during my time at Crown Doors LLC. included hand calculations for beam and wind loads and converting a bend table from manual to electric using an electric actuator.

At Ameritek International, I was able to work with their machinist doing CNC machining on lathes, mills, and screw machines. I leaned how to inspect parts in process with a variety of inspection tools to ensure parts stay in tolerance. I would load and help maintain machines while picking up a little bit of G&M code at the same time. Towards the end of the internship, I would 3D model potential projects, do processing for current and past projects, and work on multiple projects at the same time. In my last weeks at Ameritek over the summer, the other intern and I programmed a Universal Robot arm to load a stack of parts into a mill for one of the projects. Working at Ameritek helped me become a better engineering student by making me better at working in groups and problem solving while also gaining lots of knowledge about machining and the back end of engineering.
