In this position, I built up and retained a robust volunteer network using phone banks, community events, & direct contact in the Des Moines, Iowa area. To support this goal, I researched and recruited from community groups, such as farmer’s markets and digital activist spaces. In the process, I knocked over 1,000 doors and placed over 1,500 phone calls throughout the course of the summer. I worked extensively with MiniVan, VoteBuilder. I also managed volunteers by cutting canvassing turfs and distributing them to volunteers.

As an editor at the Chicago Journal of Foreign Policy, I edited articles on various pressing topics in foreign affairs and planned content for longform articles and blog posts. The Chicago Journal of Foreign Policy is a journal from the University of Chicago focusing on contemporary foreign policy issues and theory. As editor, I helped organize public events for the Journal, made staffing decisions, pitched articles, planned content, recruited and managed a team of writers, and other responsibilities. In this role, I also wrote and published my own work on foreign affairs, including work on the Yemeni conflict, campus debates on foreign policy, International Relations theory, etc.

In my work at E15, I developed a new tool through Tableau and using Python Pandas analytics for Levy Restaurants. This tool enabled analysts to access data from across multiple Levy-operated locations, rather than from one main venue. The tool was developed with an eye towards enabling variable pricing and forecasting for unique and highly variable events like concerts. In one case, my tool was used to generate an estimated $70,000 in additional revenue at a single event. In this position, I gained valuable experience in statistical analysis, data science, and economic modeling.

In this research position, I mainly encoded data on terrorist activity globally by systematically examining media reports of terror attacks. CPOST is an undergraduate research organization run by Professor Robert Pape at the University of Chicago oriented towards analyzing terrorism, with a particular focus on researching suicide terrorism. I later analyzed terrorist group propaganda videos to determine the presence or absence of sets of significant recurring themes, motifs, and methods in media published by Al Qaeda, ISIS, and other terror groups. I was one of three members of CPOST’s Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) analysis team, and helped write a regular report analyzing AQAP propaganda tactics and methods.
