Currently, nearly 50% of new teachers leave the classroom by their fifth year. When asked why they left, these frustrated teachers cited a lack of administrative support, difficulties with student discipline, and low salary levels as major reasons for their exodus. The demands keep increasing and too often the support is lacking. Instead of being encouraged, teachers are becoming discouraged. More than anything, I have a passion to bring a huge dose of encouragement to educators everywhere. In the next few decades, humanity will face some of the greatest challenges we have ever faced. If we are not able to deal with these challenges effectively, we are all in trouble. Who will be responsible for making the majority of the difficult worldly decisions? Yes, you are correct; today’s youth will be tomorrow’s leaders. These young people MUST learn and learn well. They must learn how to think, not just what to think. They must develop a diverse set of skills with enough flexibility to adjust in our rapidly changing world. How are these youngsters going to reach the levels of competence on which the future of humanity depends? The all-important answer is great teaching: influential teaching, powerful teaching, effective teaching. There has never been a time in history when the importance of teaching is as critical as it is at this moment.
