March 2024: This month, I finished a draft of my new book, an ambitious literary novel I've titled MUSIC FROM THE FLOATING WORLD, a comic and obsessively playful love story that takes place in Hong Kong, the Confederate backwoods of central Virginia and chiefly in Asheville, North Carolina.Just for fun, the following is the first paragraph of Chapter One:_____________IT HURTS. Every time I open the door it hurts. It hurts every time I open the door and switch on the light. It hurts when I switch on the light because the only woman I've made a key for, a key to my studio apartment, the only woman I love -- the very six-foot-two, remarkably Amazonian woman I love -- is not lying on my bed against the center of the back wall of my apartment. My cold bed in the center of the cold, red, 150-year-old brick wall at the rear of my one-room drab beige apartment. The tiny, dark-as-an-x-ray apartment that was once a hotel room in which F. Scott Fitzgerald, Béla Bartók and O. Henry slept. The apartment where a ghost visited me this morning at exactly 3:33.
