As a program lead for a camp, your main focus is to ensure the camp program is running as well as it possibly can, including stage build, taking stock of supplies, and public relations with campers, counselors, and church leaders. It also means being able to flex your position to whatever is needed, such as a temporary cashier or barista.

This job requires flexibility as it requires you to wear many different hats. We have to sit on duty in case anyone needs anything, manage our living areas to ensure that they live up to the school standard, and plan out and perform/work events for the students of CBU.

This job is normally performed individually but sometimes as a team, depending on the group size. We worked with groups of high schoolers, middle schoolers, and kids in grade school. Supervising them to ensure they stay where they are supposed to be and do what they should do.

This job requires its employees to take the initiative to seek out work. Our main role was to ensure the summer camp program ran smoothly, but this required a wide variety of tasks such as; paperwork, picking up trash, running errands for various other departments, and making sure that the campers and counselors had everything that they needed. And a personal favorite was taking the time to talk and interact with the campers and counselors to make them feel welcome and supported.

On Sunday mornings, we would work the coffee shop for the weekend attendees, so that the recreational staff could have a break. We would help open the shop, turn on the machines, and restock anything that needed to be restocked. Then, work the register and make the drinks that were purchased.

Every morning I worked, I would come in early and help set up the kitchen, dishwashing area, and dining hall— this way, when the chefs and dishwashers arrived, they would have little to do in matters of preparation and could instead get straight to work. Most of my time was spent helping in the dishwashing area, helping coordinate with others to make the area run as efficiently and safely as possible, and at the same time, keeping an open eye to assist in the kitchen with clean up and organization.

We often worked in pairs on whatever part was our current priority. We would make the part after reading the instructions and notes to make the first part, then make changes accordingly. It was necessary to keep the station clean, or else we may contaminate the part or break the mold. The mold required knowledge of running them and fixing minor problems.

This was only an occasional position I worked when they were short-handed, but something I still learned a lot from my time. To begin with, you need attention to detail because we have to keep our eyes open for contamination, bubbles, chips, scratches, or unfinished products, etc. Then make a plan to fit as many parts as possible into a box without endangering them, and then secure the package on a palate. We then made a tag to ensure the product was going to the correct destination.

I went through boxes that were not correctly sorted and put them away in the corresponding files.
