I have had an extensive litigation practice in the State and Federal Courts of Georgia, including numerous class actions.Significant Cases;Harold Reheis vs. Baxley Creosoting Company This case was a major State cost recovery action for environmental cleanup. It involved a claim for over two million dollars. Cason vs. Seckinger U.S.D.C.; M.D. Ga. This was the class action case where the class included all female inmates incarcerated by the Georgia Department of Corrections. The primary issues were sexual contact with inmates by staff. It involved over two hundred protected “Jane Doe” inmates and received much media attention including a national television documentary, a fictional made for television movie, and coverage on the Oprah Winfrey television show. Fambro v. Fulton U.S.D.C.; N.D. Ga. This was the class action case concerning the Fulton County jail in Atlanta. I represented the State Defendants in the Fambro case. This was the case that caused the current jail to be built. Corn v. Zant 11th Circuit. This was a death penalty case which dealt with the issue of removal for cause, prior to the guilt phase of a bifurcated capital trial, of prospective jurors who oppose the death penalty. Lewis v. Evans U.S.D.C.; S.D. Ga. This was the class action case involving all inmates in State prisons (except Georgia State Prison in Reidsville) on the constitutional issue of access to Courts. This case involved the litigation and implementation of an access to the courts plan for the State prison system which involved constructing and operating over thirty law libraries, along with the training of staff librarians and inmate clerks.
