Worked under Dr. Gregory Sloan to isolate and analyze stars within the Sextans Dwarf Spheroidal galaxy using data obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and recently released Gaia catalogue. The ultimate goal was to compare the metallicity and branch turn-off points of stars within Sextans to those of other galaxies to gain insight on the age and general composition the Sextans galaxy. The first steps included translating an existing IDL pipeline to Python to take advantage of greater variety of tools. Comparisons of the different tiles within SDSS and the Gaia database were used to filter out foreground stars. Stars of interest were then further isolated by creating a boundary around the main sequence and slowly refining it by slowly populating stars into the bounding box and error boundaries around it until a previously decided ratio between the main boundary and the error boundaries was reached. The remaining stars were then ran automatically through an imported Simbad package to find their general characteristics and compare them to other known galaxies.

Worked as a student research under Dr. Nicholas Law primarily focusing on developing a metric within Python capable of identifying signals around stars that matched what we would expect from a dusty protoplanetary disk. Lightcurve data retrieved from the Evryscope was first aligned in a Lomb-Scargle Periodogram to overlap repeating signals. A metric for filtering noise and non-anomalous patterns primarily relying on a modified Savitzky–Golay filter was created to separate standard lightcurves from ones with a known dusty disk or injected, randomized Gaussian dips to mimic a dusty disk. After the metric was properly trained, it was used to comb through the large Evryscope database. Multiple candidates were discovered and further narrowed down to two strong possibilities. Comparing these findings to the Simbad database found one with a single prior reference to a survey marking it as potentially having a dusty disk.
