About Davonna Thomas
Visit https://davonnathomas.wordpress.com/projects/ for an overview of projects and programs.Here are a few of my favorite things…Humanity: I am passionate about anyone or anything that can make the world a better place for EVERYONE through access to basic human needs, peace, safety, equality, freedom, literacy, and artistic expression.Community: A friend once told me that her favorite thing about me is that I "bloom where I'm planted." I love exploring my community and discovering all that it has to offer. Then, I love to share those discoveries with others in the community. Finally, I love identifying areas of need and creating new community programs/events to meet that need. Education: I am a mid-career post-secondary educator with a doctoral degree in literacy. I love to teach writing, critical thinkin skills, and academic literacy. I am equally passionate about the art and science of teaching. I understand that the magic in the classroom is just one piece of the equation. I am also interested in systems, policies, and patterns. I seek to maximize students' chances for success, which starts with addressing the achievement gaps for marginalized populations. Writing and Editing: I have three published scholarly journal articles, but to be perfectly honest, I am prouder of the fact that I have published a handful of poems in various creative writing magazines. I serve as an editor for my college’s creative art magazine.Literacy: I earned my PhD in Literacy Studies with a concentration in Reading Disabilities. My dissertation is about how literature circles (small group “book club” style discussion) can improve reading comprehension. (check out https://davonnathomas.wordpress.com/lit-circles/)Performing Arts: I was a piano and percussion major in college and also play the bass guitar. I even met my husband in drum corps. I have also studied dance on and off since my early childhood. These days, I keep myself busy on the creative team and board of directors of Ferry Tales Youth Theater.
