Head Of Product And EngineeringShyp Jul 2017 - Mar 2018San Francisco, Ca, UsShyp operated in consumer shipping logistics with warehouses and couriers in 5 US cities. This 9 month period running product as well as engineering was after reducing total headcount to 11 as we attempted to execute a pivot to a pure B2B model.Tech stack included 3 iOS/Android apps (for the warehouse workers, drivers and consumers), a website (Node/React) and internal admin site (Node/Angular) and business intelligence (Looker). We built several internal tools using Go. -
Vp EngineeringShyp Sep 2016 - Jul 2017San Francisco, Ca, UsTook over all of engineering (consisting of ~35-40 people) as we were started to move to a more B2B focus with SMB. This involved integrating with third party shopping carts such as Shopify and Magento. Much refactoring of the Node platform was required to pull this off, and we also brought in React for use on the new consumer website. I managed the HQ engineering teams (platform and mobile) and several offshore or remote teams for special projects such as the Magento integration and improvements to our Business Intelligence systems. -
Director Of Mobile EngineeringShyp Sep 2015 - Sep 2016San Francisco, Ca, UsShyp had several mobile apps. The best known was the award winning consumer app available in iOS and Android. There was also an iPhone app for our courier/drivers and an iPad app for our warehouse operatives. These internal apps were MDM managed.I ran the team of 10-12 IOS, Android and QA engineers supporting these apps. The initial work was refactoring MVP founder code into high quality maintainable code, greatly increasing code coverage, automated testing and deployment, and putting best practices in place including app instrumentation. -
Mobile Engineering ConsultantFreelance Jun 2015 - Sep 2015Specializing in introducing testing, code quality and deployment automation, continuous integration and other best practices. I am passionate about these subjects and focus on converting teams from "just get it working" early stage startup mode to "we need to improve and maintain this code long term" post Series A mode. Shyp was one client in this period and they ended up recruiting me to join full time.

I was involved in all levels of the product and leading the engineering effort. Meexo was acquired by Live Nation. Created a #1 (overall) app, Brain Trainer, which was downloaded over 20 million times and ranked in the top 100 grossing apps list.Technology: Objective-C (iOS), Java (Blackberry), Javascript (WebOS and a few app frameworks like PhoneGap). -
Director Of Engineering (Web/Platform)Lumos Labs Feb 2008 - Oct 2009San Francisco, Ca, UsLumosity is a platform for brain training exercises that arose from academic research and is available in multiple languages. I started as an early founding engineer creating the platform, became director at Series A funding, and grew the team from 2 to ~20. As server load grew to support our millions of users I led the efforts to scale for performance (code optimization, DB indexes, sharding). Ask me about the time I fought off a Christmas week DDOS attack by writing code to auto-update the block list router configuration at our webhosting provider.Technology: Ruby on Rails, Javascript, MySql, Caching systems (memcached, CDN), much sysadmining and scaling work, ActionScript (Flash) -

ConsultantPivotal Labs Jul 2006 - Jan 2008San Francisco, California, UsKnown now as VMware Tanzu Labs, but née Pivotal Labs. Pivotal was and still is considered perhaps the best Agile consultancy to come out of San Francisco. We practiced a strict version of agile development known as eXtreme Programming. This disciplined approach and quality of my colleagues set a high water mark for feature deployment velocity and low bug count that I have been pursuing ever since.Famously, when Twitter needed to fix their Fail Whale problem, they called in Pivotal Labs.Worked on projects for a dozen or more startup clients, and also on two internal products:- One was a Rails framework that provided all of the standard building blocks for the contemporaneous state of the art: user system with login support, messaging and other social features. We were able to jump start client projects with this system to enable rapid MVP deployment.- The other was Pivotal Tracker, now a publicly released project management tool based on XP Agile processes. Tracker was at the time one of the most advanced web apps around in its use of would become "Web 2.0" technologies with things like in-browser drag-n-drop UX. We created an internal equivalent of jQuery before jQuery had come into wide usage.Technology: Ruby on Rails and Javascript. 100% Test Driven Development, Pair Programming most of the Agile practices that have now become commonplace. -
ConsultantCollaborative Drug Discovery Apr 2007 - Oct 2007Burlingame, Ca, UsPart of an eXtreme Programming team developing a chemical informatics product in the Ruby on Rails framework. -

Chief Software Architect, FounderSynthematix, Inc Nov 2000 - Nov 2004Synthematix built enterprise software for laboratory chemists which allows them to track, analyze and interact with chemical reaction information in a structured format. In other words, we built the first professional electronic lab notebook in a time when almost all chemists were still using paper and ink notebooks, and institutional knowledge was not indexed/searchable. Typical customers were pharmaceutical companies and chemical suppliers. I was extensively involved in almost all technology related aspects, from making the Ethernet cables and building the intranet, firewall and our self hosted Internet servers, to hiring developers, project management, mentoring, designing the application, selecting or building development tools, and coding a significant portion of the products. Named on the patent for our IP. Synthematix has been acquired by Symyx Technologies, Inc., now Accelrys (ACCL).Built a system solo in 3 intense months that earned $250k from one customer by reducing the user time for a molecule database search (an NP-complete problem) from 5 minutes to under 2 seconds. Ask me how!Technology: Java, PostgreSQL, Oracle and all sysadmin work.

Senior ProgrammerVerizon Wireless Oct 1997 - Nov 2000Basking Ridge, Nj, UsDesigned and built applications used by the Network Operation Centers to track cellular network performance. Created an innovative logging system for these internal applications that stored rich metadata, and allowed including with bug reports. This allowed my team to replay user interactions within another tool I created to visualize user actions and underlying system actions side by side along with map visualization when appropriate. Use of this tooling system greatly reduced time to fix bugs and increased insight into user behavior allowing for better design. I have made use of this concept many times with subsequent projects. In a way this was a precursor to the best practice of instrumenting apps to gather user usage data.Technologies employed include Solaris, Java (AWT, RMI, JNI to C, JSP/Servlets, JDBC), Apache HTTPD and Informix RDBMS. Also worked with C, Oracle, perl, and Unix administration utilities. -
Senior Programmer / Team LeadIbm Jan 1993 - Oct 1997Armonk, New York, Ny, UsLed an agile and highly praised group of programmers in providing custom software for the IBM PC Company help center. Worked with many technologies including OS/2, AIX, various Internet protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP/Web, FTP), NetBIOS. Code was mostly in C/C++. Responsible for administrating and providing custom software for a 160 modem BBS and the IBM FTP site. Received project management training at Duke University. Consistently was graded as "exceeds expectations" in annual reviews. As a team working primarily with modems, I successfully lobbied for a hybrid Work From Home status for my team. I have often led teams that significantly operated at least partially remote ever since.
