Snowy 2.0 Project, Cooma, New South Wales, Australia

Snowy 2.0 will be one of the world’s largest pumped-storage power plants and Voith is making a major contribution with its experience and hydropower components. It will connect the two existing dams of the Snowy Scheme, Tantangara Dam and Talbingo Dam, through underground tunnels and an underground power station with pumping and generating capacity. The underground powerhouse will house six reversible Francis-type pump turbines. The capacity of the plant is designed for 2,000 megawatts and allows 175 hours of storage. The first power out of Snowy 2.0 is expected as early as 2028 (Source: www.voith.com).

Roles and Responsibilities:• Coordinates and provide engineering support to the hydropower stations to carry out root cause analysis.• Study the system configurations and identify all kinds of associated risks that may affect the reliability of the hydropower stations.• Timely initiate strategic planning and scheduling of activities such as replacement, refurbishment, modernization, up-gradation, and uprating of the hydropower stations.• Carry out studies such as Residual Life Assessment (RLA), Condition Assessment, Criticality Assessment, etc. of the various E&M equipment, HM Equipment, and all civil structures.• Assist, review, and prepare technical specifications of various EM and HM works.• Conduct a study on the new technological development taking place in the market that can enhance the overall life of the underwater components.• Provide support to the hydropower stations in the finalization of design, technical specification, and scheduling of the special/annual maintenance works of the generating units.• Establish basic rules, policies, procedures, guidelines and standards to be followed by all the power plants under DGPC.• Provide support in implementing the SAP-ERP plant Maintenance Module in all the hydropower stations. Achievements:• Successfully performed the preparation of tender documents, invitation of bids, evaluation, award of contract, execution and closure of the contract ‘’Replacement and Restoration of Generator Unit-3 of 4x170MW Mangdichhu Hydropower Plant.• Successfully performed the preparation of tender documents, invitation of bids, evaluation, award of contract, execution and closure of the contract ‘’Replacement and Restoration of Generator Unit-IV of 4x84MW Chhukha Hydropower Plant.• Successfully performed the preparation of tender documents and invitation of bids for three small hydro projects (32 MW Yungichhu, 54MW Burgangchhu, and 18 MW Suchhu) of Druk Green Power Corporation and contracts are under execution.

Centre Of Excellence For Vibration And Thermography Analysis

Roles and Responsibilities:• Conduct vibration, thermography, non-destructive testing and analysis, and condition monitoring of generating units of all Hydropower plants under Druk Green and industries beyond Druk Green.• Conduct Root Cause Failure Analysis of electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical equipment in the Hydropower plants.• Conduct laser alignment and leveling of rotating machines.• Conduct blast monitoring and analysis on the construction project site.• Conduct In-house training on condition and reliability-based maintenance.• Spearheaded the establishment of the Research and Development Center in Druk Green.• Carrying out pre feasibilities studies on the conversion of the open-loop cooling water system to a close-loop cooling water system of Chhukha Hydropower Plant (CHP).• Team Lead to Carry out the Renovation, Modernization, Upgrading, Uprating, and Residual Life assessment of Druk Green Power Plant.• Team Lead to Carry out Druk Green Technical Audit of all hydropower Plants under Druk Green. Achievements:• Developed Condition-Based Maintenance and Monitoring manuals for the company.• Procured state-of-the-art monitoring and analyzing equipment for the Hydropower Research and Development Centre.• Successfully implemented the recommendations based on my technical feasibility report on renovation, modernization, upgrading, and residual life assessment of Druk Green Power Plants.• Successful transition and implementation of condition-based maintenance approaches in Druk Green.

Tala Hydropower Plant (1020Mw)

Roles and Responsibilities:• Planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution of all the maintenance activities within the power plant.• Monitoring and maintaining the electro-mechanical equipment ensures maximum technical and economic efficiency.• Preparation of Standard Operation Procedures for all equipment in the power plant and common Operation and Maintenance manuals.• Management and supervising of all maintenance staff (86 nos.), such as supporting engineers, mechanics, riggers, welders, EOT crane operators, turners, and store keeper of the Maintenance Office.• Implement modern approaches/strategies/psis and reduce equipment breakdown and downtime.• Respond to equipment breakdowns.Achievements:• Successfully formed a new set of Maintenance Team.• Prepared and finalized the common Operation and Maintenance Manuals for all the equipment in the Power Plant.• Developed and implemented Standard Operating Procedures for all the equipment in the Power Plants.• Developed and implemented a standard format for routine and annual maintenance.• Initiated the work to transcend from breakdown maintenance practices to condition-based maintenance.• Implemented SAP-ERP plant Maintenance Module in the maintenance office.

Roles and Responsibilities:• Preparation and Finalization of Tender Documents i.e Technical Specifications, Commercial Conditions, and Price Schedules for various Electro-Mechanical Packages for the 6x170 MW Tala Hydro Electric Project i.e. 1250kW Diesel Generating Sets (two nos.), Power House Lifts, Air Conditioning &Ventilations and Electrical & Mechanical Workshop Equipment, etc. in consultation with WAPCOS and CEA, India.• Invitation of Bids, Evaluation of Technical and Commercial Bids, and preparation of Contract Documents for the above-mentioned equipment.• Execution of Contracts related to 200/40/20T Power House EOT Cranes (M/s HIL, India), 6x 170 MW Generating Units & Associated Auxiliaries, Computerised Control System (M/s BHEL, India), 400kV XLPE Insulated Power Cables (ABB Germany) and Electrical & Mechanical Workshop Equipment.• Assembly, erection/installation, testing, and commissioning of 200/40/20T EOT Cranes (2 nos.), all the six generating units of 170MW each including auxiliaries such as Generators, Pelton Turbines, Main Inlet Valves, Butterfly Valves, Hybrid Cooling Water System, Drainage & Dewatering System, G-100 Governing System, four Circuits of 400 kV Insulated Power Cables, Excitation System and Electrical & Mechanical workshop equipment. • Work completion report preparation and documentation.Achievements:• Successful completion of the Project within the scheduled time, cost, and quality.• Successful transition from Project Management to Operation Management.• Successful implementation of the Operation Management Team for the Operation and Maintenance of the 6x170 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project.
