Developing network automation tools for large scale cloud systems.

Currently leading a team of some of the worlds best network, compute, and storage architects in the development of a set of next generation, industry leading systems architectures. These integrated network, compute, and storage systems support Microsoft's mission to build great software, services, and devices . Develop the overall infrastructure architecture (compute/storage & network) to support Microsoft's line of business applications as well as various product development efforts. Work closely with product teams to build the infrastructure required to develop next generation Microsoft products, devices, and services. Assist Microsoft in reducing it's operating expenses through the rapid migration of many of Microsoft's IT systems to Microsoft's public cloud (Azure) services. Develop, test, and lead the team creating network, compute, and storage architectures for Microsoft's IT move to a hybrid cloud.

Develop cloud and data center solutions involving integration of Network, Compute, and Storage layers. Create and execute test plans with ATT and hold review with multiple stakeholders. Work closely with various Juniper and ATT teams to ensure that execution plan and its outcome are consistent with market demands and that architectures are being adopted and used by the field teams. Execute the interop and solutions test plan in the Solutions Lab to ensure that solutions are tested and validated for functionality, performance and high availability. Develop out of cycle proposals to ATT for cost savings and to assist ATT with developing competitive cloud and data center service offerings. Conduct training as needed to various internal and external technical forums.

Direct team of 2 managers and 16 sales engineers to generate $40M in revenue from company’s largest Service Provider, Web 2.0, and Enterprise customers in Canada, Latin America, and Eastern United States. Develop and lead team to complete lengthy sales cycles and build strong customer relationships. Manage $900K in annual regional budget for demo sales equipment. Report directly to CEO.Selected Accomplishments: Delivered 20% YoY growth, significantly exceeding industry average of 11%-12%, by rebuilding entire Systems Engineering team, leading relentless pursuit of business, and effectively managing change.  Played key role in developing and building new sales and account management organization. Positioned company as strong competitor in Service Provider segment and laid foundation for future growth by managing successful beta program for next generation product. Optimized sales engineering team’s effectiveness in teaming with both customers and product management by developing and implementing systems engineering training program for current hardware and software applications.

Led team of 5-15 systems engineers to penetrate and build business with some of company’s largest customers, including ATT, Verizon Business, Bloomberg, and Global Crossing. Hired, trained, developed, and administered disciplinary actions to team members. Achieved 100% of $120M quota despite sharp decline in telecom market by building partnerships with mega accounts, including AT&T, Verizon, MCI, and Global Crossing, and leading sales engineering team to collaborate with customer engineering teams and penetrate their networks. Migrated some of world’s largest networks, including Verizon Business, Global Crossing, XO Communications, and Bloomberg from no Juniper infrastructure to primarily Juniper infrastructure by successfully partnering with clients as a trusted advisor and extension of client engineering teams to focus products on client needs. Penetrated and grew business with ATT to attain 150% of quota after nearly four years of pursuing opportunities with ATT, leading sales engineering teams to design products that met client needs, and proving high level of responsiveness to ATT’s needs.

Hired as first network architect to build MSN and Microsoft corporate network. Built and led MSN Security and Internet Engineering teams. Maintained carrier relationships with UUNET, MCI, FT, BT, and DT. Managed such key vendors as Cisco in Microsoft network infrastructure. Directed test and certification process for any new equipment planned for deployment.Selected Accomplishments: Built, architected, and designed MSN dial network and supporting data centers from ground up to several million users. Developed and presented design, implementation plan, and budget to rebuild Microsoft’s corporate network to Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Won their approval and rolled out new 300+ router network with over 100-ATM switch infrastructure on time. Facilitated network convergence by developing Microsoft’s earliest MPLS deployment plans. Enabled Microsoft to operate outside of Cisco proprietary protocol by developing new VRRP protocol. Authored and published whitepapers on Internet connectivity, routing, and protocols.

Manage, direct, and coordinate the implementation of MCI's global public Frame Relay, IP, SMDS, and ATM networks. Manage team of engineers that implemented the first commercial Internet backbone for MCI. This backbone was the initial commercial replacement for NSFNet and interconnected the original regional US IP networks including Merit/MichNet, NorthWestNet, NYSERNet, SESQUINET, SURAnet, etc. Provide performance reviews/plans, budget, and reporting for approximately 15 full time employees. Provide lead technical (level 4) support for MCI's Frame Relay and IP public data networks. Develop and implement systems, processes, and project plans to implement additional services to include DNS, Usenet, switched access, dial up, and related Internet services. Interface with MCI's global partners including Stentor, KDDI, and British Telecom. A key personal success included the development of an "automated provisioning" system which allowed several thousand orders per week to be provisioned in an automated fashion reducing operations engineers required to support provisioning and management of Frame Relay customers. Key member of network management systems development team. Primary code development was in Perl & SQL.
