Dawn Valentim is a native Rhode Islander. She began drawing at a very young age, when she discovered she could draw whatever kind of horse she wanted. (See, she always wanted a horse of her own, but that wasn't going to be...) From there she began to draw whatever was contained in the world around her. She soon realized that she had some ability, as did her teachers, who began entering her work in art competitions as early as the sixth grade. It was in her final year of elementary school that she won her first award, a Gold Key in the National Scholastic Art Awards competition for a mixed media piece that featured a painted apple tree and some tissue paper and paint clouds. She continued to excel in art, earning several more Scholastic Art Awards, including a Gold Key Portfolio Award, which sent her Senior Portfolio to the national competition.Dawn continued to pursue an education in Art, beginning with the University of Rhode Island. She is currently completing her B.A. in Painting at Rhode Island College. With her background in Art, she has become a unique addition to the Education Staff at the Museum of Natural History at Roger Williams Park, Providence RI, where she has been a Museum Educator since September 2003. In addition to facilitating science programming to school groups and Girl Scouts, Dawn currently teaches an adult drawing class on Saturdays at the Museum. "Drawing from the Collections" utilizes the Museum's vast natural specimen collections for two-hour observational sketching classes facilitated by Ms. Valentim.When she isn't sharing her love for art and the sciences at the Museum, Dawn enjoys photography, drawing, painting, traveling, and spending time with her boyfriend and his two adorable cats.If you are interested in purchasing any work, or are looking for a commissioned piece, please go to my website.
