Brought on during the construction of a 530 ton-per-day Air Separations Unit (ASU), the initial focus of the role was assisting the Project Execution team with the final stages of plant construction. Focus then shifted to staffing and training the operations team, commissioning the plant, validating the plant processes, major hazards review, pre-startup safety review, operational hand over, and finally running the plant. The ASU utilized cryogenic distillation to produce liquid argon, liquid oxygen, and liquid nitrogen from air. Cryogenic liquid products were stored in ASTs and delivered to customers via cryogenic transport trailer.

Having not employed a Process Engineer at the facility for over two years, the Rockdale plant brought back the role of Process engineer to manage a $3MM portfolio of improvement projects for the site. The role was heavily focused on project management, process improvement, and root cause analysis and troubleshooting of existing issues. Having little in the way of operating procedures, the creation and maintenance of standard operating procedures was also a heavy focus. The Rockdale site manufactured asphaltic roof board and served as a distribution warehouse for the Midwest for all JM roofing products.

I served as the head of Process Engineering within the Quality department for the manufacture of coated thin films and associated products. I also served as a liaison and subject matter expert for those product lines, traveling around the world to solve problems and build relationships with ITW's customers.
  • Koppers Inc.
    Tar Process Engineer
    Koppers Inc. Jun 2014 - Jul 2015
    Pittsburgh, Pa, Us
As Tar Process Engineer for the Koppers Stickney Plant, I, along with another more senior process engineer, oversaw the processes for a two-still tar distillation plant, from feed to product. Much of my focus in this role was on plant maintenance, process improvement, and project management. During my time at Koppers I rehabilitated tanks; replaced equipment; assisted with the PHA for a new Naphthalene still; and used trends, drawings, and process knowledge to troubleshoot process upsets and to plan/execute necessary repairs. Safety was critical at that plant as the waste gas was high in H2S content. This meant most repair work that required opening up a vessel was a fresh air job. It was at Koppers that I learned how to effectively coordinate with multiple diverse groups to achieve objectives that would have been impossible to accomplish on my own.
