The tech broke all the conventional rules around data protection mechanisms and IO processing, so the challenge was real. Connecting the dots between technical capabilities and business value was a primary.

A step up into management, but still on the front lines of client business. My team was first rate and I was lucky to have them to make me look better than I was. I was also lucky to stay connected with our customers, whose business needs always challenged us to be our very best.

Back to the technical sales game, but with another significant change - to the hardware side. I was an open systems database programmer who couldn't spell RAID, let alone explain it. But they had plans and knew my skills would help. Turns out their mainframe-class storage systems were just as relevant to the growing market of mission-critical applications.

Change is always hard, but it is often through disruptive change that the best outcomes are discovered. The big jump from application developer to sales support engineer was that kind of disruptive change. I learned I had a talent for explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical people in a way they could understand it. Not a bad skill to have.

I settled for learning some cool new fourth generation programming tech called Oracle Forms, and proceeded to build awesome applications to help our military field medics.
