Melillo challenged me to do something different. Rather than the same pre-sales engineering with other people's stuff like I'd been doing for most of the last 25 years, how about putting all that experience to work as a consultant? Okay...Into the deep end I went, carrying a large rock. But Melillo saw something that perhaps even I didn't: the value of all that experience. What started out as a simple consulting task for a couple of months evolved into a multi-year strategy engagement that touched all kinds of critical areas. It opened doors I didn't even know were there. This was a great opportunity to help grow an acquired business with compelling tech into the mainstream of the enterprise-class storage conversation. The tech broke all the conventional rules around data protection mechanisms and IO processing, so the challenge was real. Connecting the dots between technical capabilities and business value was a primary success factor given the vastly different technical approach to enterprise storage design.Responsible for positioning XIV storage systems against competitive systems from EMC, IBM, Hitachi, Dell and others. Began as an individual contributor supporting the Mid-Atlantic region, before moving up to regional and national leadership roles with the growth of the technical team.It was another amazing trip with the pioneer of the enterprise class cached-disk array - Moshe Yanai.

A step up into management, but still on the front lines of client business. My team was first rate and I was lucky to have them to make me look better than I was. I was also lucky to stay connected with our customers, whose business needs always challenged us to be our very best.

Back to the technical sales game, but with another significant change - to the hardware side. I was an open systems database programmer who couldn't spell RAID, let alone explain it. But they had plans and knew my skills would help. Turns out their mainframe-class storage systems were just as relevant to the growing market of mission-critical applications running on client server systems. They needed folks who could speak that language and help connect the dots. It was a big challenge and the rewards were even bigger. Overall I spent a lot of time at EMC doing important work for big clients and helping them solve real business challenges. It was a great place to work and I was surrounded by some of the smartest people I've ever had the pleasure of working with.

Change is always hard, but it is often through disruptive change that the best outcomes are discovered. The big jump from application developer to sales support engineer was that kind of disruptive change. I learned I had a talent for explaining complex technical concepts to non-technical people in a way they could understand it. Not a bad skill to have, so I ran with it.Responsibilities included technical positioning of Informix Software's RDBMS and application development tools against primary competitors, including Oracle, Sybase, and IBM.

I got a great opportunity to expand my technical skill set, working with another 4GL tool set and back end RDBMS called Informix. This time, the application was medical practice management and automation - all that fun stuff that deals with patient records and insurance claims. Exciting!

My first job out of college. With a brand new Comp Sci degree and a background in 3GL structured programming, I was ready to set the world on fire. I settled for learning some cool new fourth generation programming tech called Oracle Forms, and proceeded to build awesome applications to help our military field medics.
