I work along-side an amazing team of talented engineers at REI that not only love the outdoors, but also thrive on building and delivering for our developer’s core platform needs. My role at REI is to lead the REI Core Platform Engineering team focused on the following areas:API Management• Leading an Enterprise API platform for external integrations using Apigee and Service Routing (Consul, Gloo and Envoy). Building out Service Mesh to extend our Internal Integration Platform and surfacing API and Kafka topics in a Dev portal for easy discovery. Application Release Orchestration \ Continuous Delivery• Focused on launching an ARO platform to fit a variety of CICD needs across the orgCloud Foundation Services• InfraSec Pipeline for AWS Cloud foundational needs across the REI org\accounts• Build+Deploy for CI only areas inclusive of Terraform build automation in AWS• Consulting Dev teams on Cloud engineering best practices• Lead Cloud\DevOps technical training to help advance technical depth across the orgCore Infrastructure Services• Data center systems design, automation and build inclusive of physical infrastructure, OS (Windows and Linux) and Virtualization (VMWare)• Hyper-converged solutions for our Retail systems infrastructureThe main goal of the Core Platform Engineering team is to unlock the potential of the application teams so they spend more time focusing on the business functionality, increasing velocity and reducing time to market for their respective domain(s). Established a DevSecOps practice for REI, centralizing AWS Cloud Security (and Ops) services to help Dev teams not have to focus on core Cloud security (WAF, IDS, End Point, Scanning, etc), IAM, Network and other foundational Cloud services. The work done in this program is expressed through a "infrastructure as code" pipeline (GIT+Terraform+Jenkins). In addition the team is focused on compliance as code with continuous audit against external facing endpoints, IAM posture, etc. Finally, the program I lead is also focused on Cloud training for all of REI to help train our app teams on how to build in AWS securely, leveraging our pipeline, as well as training in areas like Splunk, Containerization, etcAnother portion of my team is focused on Data Center modernization which includes automation of our compute delivery, container management / orchestration capabilities and elevation of data center real time perf through tools like grafana (for perf showback) and pagerduty (for monitoring aggregation). This team is heavily focused on InfraDev practices and finding new ways to use ansible and other tools to automate the data center management and maintenance areas.I am also focused on organizational change to shift silo'd engineers to more 'full stack systems engineers'. This means changing the traditional way of working and movement towards an understanding of network all the way up to our security edge, and everything in between. Also elevating the team to operate with DevOps practices (everything is code) and more collaboration tools like JIRA, Slack and Confluence. Investment and training is important here at REI as we want to have our engineers elevate to market relevant skills. Having a culture of continuous improvement and growth mindset is core to our engineering values
