About Deborah Blum

Deborah Blum is a Pulitzer-Prize winning science journalist and book author and has been director of the Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT since 2015.She worked as a newspaper journalist for more than 20 years, most of those as a science writer. While at The Sacramento Bee, she won a Pulitzer prize (1992) for a series on ethical issues in primate research. She turned that series into a book, The Monkey Wars, published in 1994. She has since written five other books, most recently two focused on chemistry: The Poison Squad, which was a New York Times Notable Book for 2018., and will be featured as a documentary on PBS's American Experience in 2020., and The Poisoner's Handbook (2010), a New York Times best seller which was also an American Experience documentary film.Before moving to MIT she wrote an online column about toxicology, Poison Pen, for The New York Times and before that was a chemistry blogger for Wired. She was a journalism professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1997 to 2015 and was named to an endowed chair in 2005, becoming the Helen Firstbrook Franklin Professor of Journalism. After moving to MIT to head the KSJ program, she launched a digital science magazine, Undark, in 2016. The magazine (undark.org) now partners with publications ranging from The Atlantic to NPR, attracts millions of readers, and has won numerous awards, including the George K.
