About Darrick Borowski

A fierce believer in the power of community and the potential of design, innovation, and entrepreneurship to unlock this power, I build teams, products, and places that reimagine existing typologies and systems to make cities and places that are more vibrant, equitable, and sustainable. I work with organizations and brands that share these values to help them innovate, scale, and maximize their impact in the world. At WeWork, working with the Cofounder/Chief Creative Officer, I led concepting and development on new products/business lines for leveraging the company’s growing platform for social & environmental impact, including WeLive, the world’s first large-scale community-based (co)living brand. As Cofounder and Principal at ARExA, I've used applied design research to advance new modes of living and working in an increasingly urbanizing world. As Creative Director at JPDA, I led teams in retail, entertainment, branding, and interactive experience design for top tier clients including Apple, Harley Davidson, O2 UK and the fastest retail roll-out in American history for ethical clothing manufacturer American Apparel. My approach to problem solving is shaped by systems thinking, biomimicry, and a deep trust in empathy, collaboration, and process. Each project is seen as an opportunity for research through design and visa-versa, with an interest in our relationship with design and its effects on us and our behavior. I teach design at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. I’ve lectured, taught, and served as guest critic at top schools of architecture and design, including The Architectural Association, Pratt, Parsons, UIUC, CCA, and Harvard GSD. I received my Master of Architecture with Distinction from the Architectural Association in London and my Bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Material/Phenomenal: Performance & Meaning in the Design of Environments. –Design Studio course introducing students to design thinking and a process-oriented problem-solving methodology. The course is designed in two-parts—Fall (Performance) and Spring (Meaning)—with the second semester building on the first. The Fall semester’s focus, performance, emphasizes design driven by the relative fitness for an intended function. Decisions are encouraged to come out of the performative qualities of material, form and spatial phenomena with an emphasis on the human experience of the built environment. Design is “found” through a series of iterative exercises. In the Spring semester, we add in the role of ‘meaning’ as a consideration in our design process. We also delve more deeply into ‘spatial performance’ looking more closely at the role of phenomena in our experience of space. Our first project is an installation in which we harness material properties and form to manipulate natural phenomena – light, sound, wind, wave motion, air quality, etc... The second and final project, The Politics of Space, explores the designer's responsibility and agency in the design of space and challenges students to delve into issues of social justice with a changing theme each year. Process, iteration, and multidisciplinary research are emphasized. Design is conducted via many modes of work - reading, research, drawing, modeling, writing and presenting. Students maintain a class blog—http://materialphenomenal.com —posting projects, both final and work-in-progress. We discuss current events, exhibitions and lectures, and organize field trips. Besides the typical studio work, we have a number of tutorials/workshops, addressing best practices in contemporary designsoftware, including InDesign, Rhino/Grasshopper, and others.
