Dominic Buckner's research interests are rooted in the strong interdisciplinary field of structural biophysical chemistry. During his undergraduate studies, Dominic focused on nanoscale material science, specifically the creation of ZnO semiconductor layer on Quartz substrates, and the development of autofocusing technology for TEM and SEM using Arduino and Raspberry Pi. To complement his technical expertise, he pursued a certification in Biotechnology, where he honed his wet-bench skills, including DNA extraction, PCR gene cloning/transformation, protein extraction, and Western Blot techniques.At the graduate level, Dominic initially pursued an M.Eng. in Biopharmaceutical Engineering, conducting research on the development of biologics like monoclonal antibodies and biosimilars. However, he soon realized that this path did not align with his core research goals. Transitioning to an M.Sc. in Bioinformatics and Biochemistry, he gained invaluable skills in NGS, big data statistical analysis, and computational biology, though he again felt a disconnect with his primary interests.His graduate research, which included nanoparticle toxicological studies involving induced coupled plasma mass spectroscopy and wet-bench experience in a cell culture lab, helped refine his focus. Dominic's primary research interest lies in structural biophysical chemistry, particularly in understanding the intricacies of protein folding from both a physical and chemical perspective. He is also deeply interested in the design and development of organic, inorganic, and metalorganic nanoparticles for targeted protein and ribosomal interactions. Dominic believes that advancements in this field could fundamentally revolutionize our understanding of disease expression and the development of novel drug therapies.
