Deborah Burand is a professor of clinical law at NYU School of Law. At the Law School, she directs the International Transactions Clinic. She also is the Faculty Director of the Grunin Center for Law and Social Entrepreneurship.Prior to joining the faculty of NYU School of Law, Deborah was on the faculty of the University of Michigan Law School where she co-founded and directed an international transactions clinic.From August 2010 through late 2011, Deborah took a leave of absence from the University of Michigan to serve as Vice President and General Counsel of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the US government's development finance institution. In 2009 she was the Finance Topic Leader (together with Jan Piercy) for the Clinton Global Initiative.Since 2001, Deborah has been active in the microfinance sector. She has held senior positions at two global microfinance networks - FINCA International and Grameen Foundation. Deborah also is a co-founder of Women Advancing Microfinance (WAM) International. Prior to entering the microfinance industry, Deborah held senior, internationally-focused positions at the Federal Reserve Board and US Treasury Department. She also worked as an international corporate attorney at the law firm, Shearman & Sterling, in New York. During her time at Shearman & Sterling, she provided pro bono support to the world's first debt-for-nature swap and other debt-for-development swaps. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and former International Affairs Fellow of the Council. She holds a joint graduate degree from Georgetown University, (JD/MSFS).
