As one of three developers at this innovative robotics start-up, I was responsible for updating and maintaining the Python codebase driving the autonomous, brain–based behaviour of our flagship robot MiRo. This primarily involved researching, developing, and testing new features, including stereoscopic depth perception, dynamic pathfinding, and optic flow–based collision detection. I also helped to write and edit interim progress reports for investors, and assisted customers with software queries.The role required an ability to work independently on potential solutions while maintaining excellent communication with remote colleagues to successfully integrate my code with their work. An ability to design robust solutions that worked within a constrained compute and power budget and in the face of imperfect and noisy robot hardware while was also essential.

This involved detailed background research on a given topic prior to exploring our hypotheses via the design and development of an experimental paradigm and a computational or robot model.The role required me to rapidly learn new technical skills to tackle novel challenges, scientific writing proficiency for writing up our findings into publishable research papers, and excellent time management and self–motivation to keep on top of the competing demands of multiple projects.
