As an emerging sustainability professional, my work revolves around triple bottom line issues in the built environment. The fundamental basis of my design ethos is that cities should be designed around the needs of people. My research and design work specifically focuses on post-industrial cities and neighborhood development (TOD). I’m particularly concerned about the plight of the working class, especially in regards to millennials and future generations, when considering how poor land-use planning degrades our ecology, quality of life/place, and ability to fully function as a society. In order to build cities for people, I believe that the architectural, urban planning, and development practices must become more integrated as part of a paradigm shift towards sustainable urbanism. The challenges facing these efforts are immense, yet, they present unique opportunities where individuals can come together to lead what Beatrice Galilee calls a 'performative architecture' - that creates "spaces that exist as a stage for social and political action."While earning my Masters of Science in Sustainable Design and Bachelors of Science in Architecture, I have practiced a transdisciplinary approach to design through my work on various collaborative projects in Tokyo, Copenhagen, and Philadelphia. Part of my work involved rowhome rehabilitations in Camden, New Jersey with Cicada Architecture and Planning, Inc. These experiences have led to a conviction that the design process must be more responsive towards the public realm through outreach, charrettes, critical debate, and tactical urbanism.
