During my time volunteering one day per week under the Summer research program at the National Vision Research Institute (NVRI), I had the opportunity to troubleshoot code related to intrinsic optical imaging data. My specific task was to visualize retinotopic maps in the visual cortex, which show the spatial organization of neurons the to the visual field in the brain.Working at NVRI was an incredible experience that allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the field of vision research. I was thrilled to work alongside professionals who are at the forefront of this exciting and rapidly evolving field.As a volunteer, I was dedicated and eager to learn. I demonstrated a strong work ethic and paid close attention to detail while troubleshooting code related to intrinsic optical imaging data.Visualizing retinotopic maps in the visual cortex is an essential part of understanding how the brain processes visual information. By contributing to this task, I helped improve the output of code used to analyze the experimental data into useful results.Overall, my experience at NVRI was both rewarding and insightful. I gained valuable skills and knowledge that will undoubtedly benefit me in my future endeavors, thank you to Hamish Meffin for the opportunity and Jason Jung for supervising and teaching me about the field!

During my end-of-year break, I worked at Mukti, a Christian Non-Profit Organisation. I manually reviewed their database containing pledges from their donors, updating and correcting information and forming a spreadsheet with comments for particular cases. I then made a short presentation of my findings to the other employees.Though reviewing over 1300 pledges wasn't the most thrilling task I relished the opportunity to find ways to speed up and produce meaningful data to analyze the state of the database. The contracted work was finished, but I was given a new task to send personalized Christmas emails to pledge holders with attachments and salutations depending on the recipient. This consisted of around 600 emails and about 100 unique attachments. After sending these emails and being told that this process occurred multiple times a year and wasn't able to be automated using the organization's bulk email program, I decided to attempt to use my knowledge of Python to automate the process going forward.After proposing this and making a rough demo, I spent the last couple of weeks at Mukti creating an email program with a basic command-line interface to draw from an excel sheet to send personalized emails with individualized attachments and salutations as well as generate ready-to-mail letters for pledge holders with no email address.The program has error-checking capabilities and processes up to 600 personalized emails in around two minutes as opposed to the almost 2 weeks it took me to send them manually!
