As an intern on the Research Team, I explored new avenues to improve Pryon's Information Retrieval Question Answering (IRQA) systems. One of my projects was to research & implement a model for recognizing and expanding follow-up questions in IRQA systems. I was able to take this model from the vague idea presented by my manager to a component of their product in production. I also built a task-oriented dialogue system using Rasa, replicated the results of research papers, explored metrics for scoring web forum answers, etc.

As a Linguistic Data Intern, I was able to contribute to my team's agile workflow by completing several kanban tasks. Some of my larger projects were building a proof of concept tool for recognizing regions of structured text (like tables, headers, etc.) in raw ASCII text, building a continuous extraction pipeline for acquiring data in several languages from RSS Feeds and newspapers, and working with annotators to improve NER Annotation Guidelines.

I designed and delivered various tools to streamline VoiceScript's success. Some prominent examples were my web scraper which gathered several gigabytes of information for core models, and a user interface for an algorithmic approach to computing company metrics.

I built a model to forecast future loads on services. In order to do this, I cleaned and organized existing data and tried various machine learning models and approaches. Surprisingly, the nature of the data did not lend itself to a time-series forecasting solution and so more creative solutions had to be developed.

On and off, I have collaborated with Cobalt to create new technologies. I first teamed up with them to build a novel acoustic model for German speech recognition. Using Kaldi and some proprietary methods, I built a functioning Speech Recogniser that they integrated into a highly functioning product.I also had the opportunity to design a conversational math tutor application. My efforts were focused on training the intents and building stories in the dialogue manager. On top of that, I connected the system with datasets of math problems and code to check answers in a variety of formats.

I developed a model and pipeline to forecast the supply and demand of core services both in the short term and 10 years into the future. Using domain knowledge and SQL, I was able to obtain and clean data sets to find solutions to new problems. One example of the benefits I brought my team involved optimizing an Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) process where I was able to reduce the overall runtime from 5 hours to 15 minutes.

My role grew over the time I was in this position. I started as a Kiribati language interpreter where it was my responsibility to provide quality interpretation and translation for international missionaries. In this role I coordinated and trained many volunteer interpreters to increase the overall quality of interpretation for this language. From there, I moved to the office where I maintained the everchanging database of all customers.
