Throughout the course of a Formula 1 race, drivers maneuver countless situations that can delineate their own performance from other drivers. Understanding the typical results of a driver on race weekend is critical for constructors when implementing team strategies, such as car setups and pit stops. Some viewers of the sport even wonder if it is beneficial for teammates to engage in battles on track due to the increased risk of constructors losing many points in collisions. Because of this, my research is intended to classify drivers based on their typical race day performances and establish the dynamics of successful and unsuccessful teams. Using historical Formula 1 race data since the sport’s inaugural season in 1950 and the statistical computing program R, I will make use of unsupervised clustering models. These models will determine where drivers are best classified based on their driving characteristics and show how constructor success is connected to their selection of drivers. Formula 1 constructors have many factors to consider when selecting which drivers to give a racing seat in any season which is why a strong understanding of who they are sending out on track together is imperative.
