I am no longer actively employed, having retired early in order to care for my wife who is seriously ill.My last employment was as a Senior Consultant with Ricardo Rail, based at their York office. This was from August 2015 until July 2020 and before that I worked within the Strategic Aviation Team of EC Harris LLP (part of the global Arcadis Group) from August 2013 until April 2015, based at their Leeds office. I was also employed for 22 years by CSE International Ltd, a highly respected systems safety and assurance consultancy.By the time I retired I had amassed more than 30 years’ experience of high integrity systems engineering for safety, security and business/mission critical systems. Much of this experience was in the assessment of the design and development of safety related and secure software, for a variety of different types of systems and using a wide variety of analysis and assessment techniques.The systems I gained detailed experience of included automotive systems (ABS and self-levelling air suspension systems), advanced rail traffic control systems and airport systems.I also gained extensive experience in the establishment of progressive assurance regimes for railway projects and in the development of the System Assurance Arguments (Technical Cases) for railway projects using Goal Structuring Notation (GSN). I have acted as part of the safety advisory team for a major railway project, inspecting and validating all submissions to the Independent Safety Assessor.I became proficient in the development of processes for the identification, capture and refinement of the requirements for safety systems and software intensive control systems and gained a good working knowledge of the use of the DOORS requirements management toolset.My final assignments were as Software ISA for the development and deployment of novel, computer based interlocking and level crossing controllers on to the UK mainline rail network. I also used to present a course to Network Rail on software development and assessment against the requirements of CENELEC software safety standard EN50128.
