I served as electrical engineering lead and shared responsibility with project manager on a small team of students participating in RockSat-X through the Colorado Space Grant Consortium, after having successfully completed the RockSat-C program earlier in the summer.For RockSat-X, the design requirements are much more strict. The suborbital rocket coasts to a higher altitude, and the payload cover is jettisoned to expose the payload bay to the vacuum of space for experimentation. This also means that the payloads are fully exposed to atmospheric reentry and then must be waterproof for the rocket's splashdown in the Atlantic.These additional design requirements drastically increase the complexity of the design and manufacturing process. The sounding rocket used for the X flight also provides a total of only five double-spaced experiment slots, making the program much more competitive, especially for schools vying for a double-size payload.Once again we were awarded flight status for a double-space payload after several months of intensive work. However, our funding was rescinded as MSU temporarily pulled out of the Colorado Space Grant Consortium and we had to give away our flight status.

I served as the testing and integration lead on a small student team participating in RockSat-C through the Colorado Space Grant Consortium.Our goal was to design, manufacture, test, and integrate a payload which NASA then launched on a suborbital rocket. We competed with dozens of other universities and colleges across the US for one of eight payload slots and were awarded flight status by NASA after a months-long process of design reviews and project updates in coordination with NASA and the Colorado Space Grant Consortium.Ours was one of only three successful experiments. Our team was comprised of three students (myself included), and none of us had taken anything beyond college trigonometry at the time.
