In my current role, I primarily provide the supreme court with legal editing and research support. I also staff judicial branch committees and task forces such as the task force charged with rewriting the criminal rules of procedure, a committee responsible for modifications to the rules of electronic procedure, and a task force responsible for creating court rules of procedure and forms implementing a recent legislative change involving criminal court record expungement. I am also assigned large and small projects, such as overhauling court rules and internal procedures, and am responsible for managing all aspects of these projects through completion. During the adjudicative term, I assist in the training and mentoring of the justice’s law clerks.

In addition to the duties I provided as a staff attorney, I was responsible for the hiring, managing, training, and mentoring of law clerks and staff attorneys. In this role, I also developed and implemented procedures and new technology to increase the efficiency and productivity of the firm.

Des Moines, Iowa Area

As a staff attorney at a small law firm, I was responsible for all aspects of cases from client intake through settlement or appeal, including client communications, opposing counsel interactions, petitions, discovery practice, motions, briefs, depositions, pre- and post-trial filings, trial preparation, appellate filings, and mediation. I worked on cases in a wide variety of plaintiff’s litigation practices areas, including civil rights, employment, medical and legal malpractice, general negligence, sexual assault, and personal injury. I also worked on several national class actions in addition to smaller state class actions.

At this contract position, I assisted attorneys with reviewing native-language Japanese documents for two large class actions related to the price-fixing of display technologies and also provided English translations of Japanese language emails, diaries, calendars, and other business documents. In preparation for depositions, I reviewed and analyzed the opposing party's translation objections and prepared translation objections.

In this contract position, I supported the IT Procurement department in an extensive information technology licensing agreement audit.

In this contract position, I aided the legal department in auditing and interpreting proprietary software licensing agreements.

In addition to the duties I provided as a student consultant, I also provided email technical support to the university's faculty, staff, and students. While working as the primary email technical support responder, I emphasized efficient turn-around times and endeavored to provide comprehensive responses designed to reduce follow-up questions, streamlining the email support process.

As a student consultant, I primarily provided customer service and support regarding computer-related issues to over 30,000 students, faculty and staff. I also worked on a number of projects, including composing technical documentation for internal and external use, participating in a group dedicated to implementing protection strategies for the escalating virus and spyware problem, and participating in the creation of a sub-group designed to provide computer software repair services to faculty and staff.

At this internship, I prepared service agreement contracts for industrial and information technology related companies and authored an international license agreement for a Japanese robotics company seeking to license its products in Europe in addition to drafting client communications and other legal research.

At this internship, I primarily wrote client memos, performed intellectual property research, and provided support and legal analysis for attorneys in copyright and trademark infringement cases. I also drafted and edited license agreements for Japanese companies seeking to expand their product lines into the United States and Europe.
