About Don Donzal

Father, cybersecurity executive, community builder, hacker, maker, passionate technologist & life-long learner who blames his parents for his entrepreneurial tendencies. I'm proud that my son graduated high school early and became an active-duty Marine in April of 2022, and that my daughter is growing into a determined, intelligent woman that likes writing even more than I do (and is better). I believe leaders must also know how to be led & hard work is the foundation of success. What gets me energized every morning is the possibility of helping someone change their life be it with the career of their dreams or attaining life goals. Being strong in mind, body and spirit has allowed continued drive and optimism. Additional interests include reading, writing, fitness, physics, scifi, philosophy, investing, making, mentoring and not least family. My first 'real' IT job was as a Systems Admin for a psychiatric hospital. During the tech boom of the 90s, I became CTO of Telco Billing Solutions. After the tech bubble burst, I accepted a position in my hometown as Dir of IT for the Dept of Medicine at UIC, home to the largest medical school in the US. Being an entrepreneur at heart, I took my experience from a wide range of industries and founded The Digital Construction Company. I'm an advocate of industry certifications as a baseline of knowledge while understanding that true career advancement comes from experience and sharing with others. For this reason, The Ethical Hacker Network (EH-Net) & ChicagoCon were founded, and I immersed myself in the greater hacker / InfoSec community. At its height, EH-Net was in the top 1% of all sites online and not just in cybersecurity. Working at Optiv solidified my broader view of the entire cybersecurity landscape and expanded my community building chops by building an intranet from scratch for internal communications, sales enablement, knowledge management and employee engagement. EH-Net and I were "acqui-hired" by eLS which in turn was acquired by INE. Being an Editor-in-Chief and Director of Community allowed for evangelism of the effectiveness of self-driven education to achieve career goals and the power of community building to enhance brand awareness and corporate growth. I've been lucky to share knowledge through 100s of articles, books, webinars, interviews and videos, and the privilege of speaking at events such as RSA, SANS, B-Sides, InfoSec World, The Diana Initiative, IoT Village, et al. But the real honor lies in the personal messages of gratitude for lives changed.
