Engineering management support for the Contextual Services team. Focused on backend services for the Firefox ecosystem, bringing the right content to the user at the right time.

Supported and extended Devoted’s internal web-based application as part of a cross-functional product organization (using Go gRPCs, React, Typescript, Snowflake, and more). My focus was on improving utilization management as part of the Clinical Operations engineering team.

Led a Privacy & Security division focused on end-user control of passwords and personal data. Managed ten engineers (four directly, six matrixed) on three disparate efforts (Lockwise iOS and Android apps, Firefox desktop browser password manager, Firefox Monitor web service/site) across two countries and six time zones. • Guided successful feature launches supporting Mozilla’s “Skyline” release and assisted with roadmap planning for future features and releases. • Transformed team morale and productivity: achieved regular release cadences for all teams in under six months. • Streamlined meeting schedules; established consistency and strategic alignment within teams; integrated planning/coordination with Product, Design/UX, QA, and Program Management across all team efforts. • Balanced resourcing conflicts to ensure updates to key Privacy & Security efforts outside of our team (Multi-Account Containers, Facebook Container, and the Firefox VPN website). • Served on Incident Commander task force to standardize incident response protocols for the larger Engineering organization; designed Jira-based tracking process with Program Management.

Directly led the Web Extensions/API team; indirectly led the addons.mozilla.org (AMO) team. Managed six engineers and one manager across seven countries and eight time zones. • Partnered with Product leadership to develop and deliver proposals for revamping the Add-ons organization structure and operation to maximize user safety and reduce internal expenditure. • Focused team on user-facing improvements to Firefox: re-factored the about:addons UI, replacing proprietary XBL/XUL with HTML; completed API implementations, bringing web extensions to parity with Chrome; introduced a feature enabling the browser’s first run to allow a user to complete the installation of an extension that began on AMO in a non-Firefox browser. • Consolidated the entire engineering team’s work planning into one system for increased organizational visibility. • Served as initial Incident Commander during global incident (Firefox’s “Armagadd-on”).

Managed a team of seven engineers focused on diverse core functionality of Firefox (installer and updater, crash reporting, policy management, telemetry) across four countries and four time zones. • Guided creation of Pingsender application shipped with Firefox to increase speed and percentage of crash report receipts. • Assisted with Flash plugin end-of-life plan, multi-process support rollout, and update effectiveness analysis.

Managed a team of six developers who built and maintained the Firefox OS Marketplace. The team’s location spanned two countries and four time zones. • Coordinated workstreams with Product and Program teams. Maintained publicly-available information sources (meeting notes, video recordings, and roadmaps). • Fostered consistent project organization and estimation practices. Participated in weekly code deployments.

Managed Technology department involving up to fifteen technologists (software engineers, QA specialists, and Business Analysts). Advised senior staff and executives on: process/resource management, estimates, proposals/RFP responses, client pitches. Oversaw custom client project system/software architecture and application development. Served as de facto CIO/CTO, by recommendation. Led IT orientation for all staff. • Promoted regular cross-departmental skills integration and knowledge sharing. • Formalized tools and practices to modernize methodologies and improve offerings to be reusable and sustainable. • Performed IT administration and desktop support as necessary: extended infrastructure virtualization; guided network upgrades, file and database server maintenance; managed hardware and software purchasing/licensing.

Served in diverse roles as needed: software developer, solution architect, business analyst, and client-facing technical lead. Developed and maintained custom web applications/sites (using ASP, ColdFusion, Perl, PHP, Python, HTML/CSS/JavaScript). Designed and managed integration of custom code and enterprise systems. • Introduced semantic markup, standards-based development, process definition, and documentation standards. • Implemented firewalls, re-organized network shares, and performed server system administration. • Select client work: designed algorithms, data transfers, and system migrations (Brookings Institution); diagnosed performance issues and re-engineered solutions (Peace Corps); technical lead and point of contact (Venture Philanthropy Partners, Washington Speakers Bureau, U.S. House of Representatives).
