I have been involved in the Furnishing industry since I was 17 employed as an apprentice Cabinetmaker in Sydney in 1986. I have worked in commercial furniture, shopfitting and joinery, doors, windows and built-in cabinetry and wardrobes as a tradesman, foreman, production manager, and operations manager.I was previously employed by FIAA as a workplace trainer and assessor covering all of NSW and the ACT from 1997-2002. From there I took up a position as a National Production Manager for Creative By Design assisting Australian and New Zealand franchisees with training, systems implementation, and business development.Systems and structure are the keys to managing production in this industry. There are simply too many parts to the puzzle to rely on your memory; it is a high maintenance industry but just as rewarding when jobs go in the first time on time. Far too many Production Managers are promoted beyond their means without the necessary coaching, mentoring or training.
