Dean is the Course Director of the Bachelor of Screen Production, Swinburne University. Dean is a researcher and innovator who teaches across a range of media disciplines including digital video production, smartphone media, screenwriting, and web-series production. Dean's research has a strong focus on mobile media, emergent digital technologies, and innovation in the Screen Production sector. Dean is a curriculum designer who specialises in designing screenwriting and digital production units aimed at meeting the needs of the emergent digital media industries. Dean is an early adopter of mobile media. Since 2004 he has been using mobile media to produce films and photography that have screened in both national and international forums. In 2008, he published his Masters by Research on Mobile Media Production and co-curated one of Australia’s first exhibitions dedicated to mobile video and photography at the Queensland Centre for Photography. Dean's photography in this exhibition was acquired for the prestigious Daryl Hewson Photography Collection. Dean’s expertise in Smartphone Filmmaking and Digital Storytelling has resulted in designing and providing training for government funded projects with The Council of Adult Education, William Angliss Institute and St Mary’s House of Welcome.Dean is an advocate/researcher for Mid-Century Australian Design, he appeared on the ABC TV series 'Streets of Your Town', has presented talks on radio and at public institutions, and written for publications for the National Gallery of Victoria. Dean was awarded a Creative Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria in 2016 to research the artist and designer Clement Meadmore. Dean was the co-curator of Clement Meadmore: The art of Mid-Century Design, a major exhibition held at Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne University, 20 Nov 2018 – 3 Mar 2019.Dean's creative practice involves the use of analogue and emergent media technologies to examine the ways in which visual media may inform our understanding of historical time, place and personal/cultural memories. Dean is currently a Phd candidate at the School of Art, Australian National University, Canberra, where he is researching 'aftermath photography' and the visual representation of personal and cultural memories relating to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan.
