I became an applied physicist by getting a job in magnetic resonance imaging (which I knew nothing about) based on a knowledge of fluid mechanics I gained working on my dissertation in Zoology. People were interested in imaging flows with MRI. I like taking on projects people think are really difficult once I get clear intuition that they are possible. Changing fields is generally not an obstacle. A common theme in my work in nuclear magnetic resonance is developing methods to image useful things that were thought very difficult, if not impossible, to image.While feeling a bit like a pig commuting in my car that gets only 47 mpg, I realized that I can construct, in my mind's eye, a car that weighs about as much as me and gets over 300 mpg. I ordered the big boring book of US safety regulations and I think they can be satisfied and, in many cases, the very small car is safer. I do not, however, have equipment for laying up large fiber-reinforced resin body parts and CAD/CAM design and machining. Do you?
