About Dean Smith

I am an enthusiastic educator with over 30 years of teaching and coaching experience in the elementary and secondary panels in Ontario and have recently joined the Liberal Studies faculty at Durham College.Throughout my teaching career I have been involved in a wide range of multicultural events and initiatives in our school board community with an emphasis on collaboration, anti-racism and trauma-informed training, and youth empowerment. As an off-reserve member of the Pictou Landing First Nation I believe in and practice the Two-Eyed Seeing approach, as taught by Mi'kmaw Elder Albert Marshall, to my own way of learning and teaching. My application of "Etuaptmumk" appears as a strong desire to prepare students for the 21st century through the use of Web 2.0 tools (incl. Google Classroom and D2L) in nurturing their critical thinking skills through a lens of authentic Indigenous traditional teachings. My Graduate Studies work focused on the research and implementation of building leadership capacity with Indigenous Youth, consolidating my over 30 years of qualified coaching, teaching and work as an Indigenous Education Consultant from K-12.

In my present role I have a wide range of roles and responsibilities, the first being the ongoing support of the Indigenous students and families within our school board. This overarching responsibility moves forward in a collaborative manner with my colleagues in our Indigenous Education Department. Broader responsibilities include the writing, development and facilitation of culturally sensitive and appropriate Professional Development support regarding all Indigenous-related curriculum connections. Highlights have been the collaborative work as a writing team member for NBE (Contemporary Indigenous Voices) Gr. 11 English program initiated for the 2019-2020 school year for all KPRDSB secondary schools. I also collaborate with our IT Department in the ongoing development and curation of our internal resource website for all KPRDSB staff. Successfully worked with students from Grades 9 - 12 at two of the largest secondary schools in KPRDSB during this period, East Northumberland Secondary School and Cobourg Collegiate Institute (formerly named Cobourg District Collegiate East). I was qualified to plan, teach and evaluate in the following subject areas: Indigenous Studies, English, Canadian and World Studies, Civics and Careers, and French as a Second Language, the latter ranging from Core French to French Immersion. Collaborated on the development of our school board's first NBE course offered as an e-Learning credit and delivered the course for two years. I also worked in the role as a Teacher-Librarian for three years. I had also served terms as the OSSTF Branch president and vice-president and as the Department Head/Lead Teacher of Modern Languages.Supporting students through extra-curricular sports and clubs remained my passion and to this end I particularly enjoyed being a teacher-coach of girls' and boy's rugby teams, varsity wrestling teams, as well as a teacher-advisor of the White Pine Reading club and the Amnesty International student group and with student council. .

Successfully planned for, taught and evaluated students in the French Immersion and English Intermediate programs at two public schools, Dr. Hawkins and C.R. As a way of demonstrating gratitude and giving back to these caring adults, I started my life as a teacher-coach of Intermediate boys' and girls' volleyball, 3- pitch, Track and Field and floor hockey teams. I was also a teacher-advisor of the Environmental and Chess clubs and lunch time intramural programs. I also served as a teacher representative on respective School Councils and had the role of acting Vice-Principal at C.R. Gummow from November of 1998 - June 1999.
