In 2013 I was the founding Assoc VP for I&E charged with creating the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (AIE) to engage every college in design thinking and lean startup. I have also been an instructor and a coach in the Stanford d.school's Teaching and Learning Studio.Prior to UMD, I was fortunate to spend 15 years discovering and developing my own entrepreneurial mindset in Silicon Valley. I served as the CTO and VP Gaming Business of Immersion Corporation. I helped transform the venture-backed, Stanford robotics lab spinout into a publicly traded (NASDAQ: IMMR), world-leading licensor of haptics technology embedded in over a billion devices from companies like Apple, BMW, Microsoft, Samsung, and Electronic Arts. I hold over 40 patents, and I was a Pi Tau Sigma graduate from MIT, an engineering AFOSR Fellow and PhD from Stanford, a Palmer Scholar MBA from Wharton, and a 2-time Washingtonian Magazine Top 100 Tech Titan. Idea Lab Ignite Lead Instructor
UMD was asked to partner with HHS to create and launch the HHS Ignite Accelerator, a 3-month internal innovation startup program for HHS staff aiming to improve the way their program, office, or agency works. From HHS: Department staff compete to get in. They bring a problem worth exploring and the Accelerator program provides the opportunity for them to carve out and test one or more solutions to those pressing challenges. The Ignite Boot Camp is partly a training. It’s also part design sprint. The goal of each Ignite team is to validate (or invalidate) the business value of their idea through a series of small but useful tests. The outcome of each Ignite project is usually no more than a low-res prototype or a minimally viable product (MVP) that has gone through some sort of beta-testing with actual end-users, although some projects may go further. Those prototypes and plans may change along the way, and in fact pivots (so long as they are supported by customer and stakeholder feedback) are encouraged! HHS IDEA Lab has a contract with the University of Maryland’s Academy for Innovation & Entrepreneurship to run the Ignite Boot Camps. Each Boot Camp has been different from the one previous, and HHS and AIE work regularly to continually design and refine the agenda and approach.https://public3.pagefreezer.com/browse/HHS.gov/31-12-2020T08:51/https://www.hhs.gov/cto/blog/2016/04/21/our-3day-boot-camp-part-training-part-design-sprint.html
