I am a lifetime resident of Indiana with many years in a fast paced collision repair shop. While spending time in the office writing estimates and providing customer service, I enjoyed refinishing. I always gravitated to the shop doing the body and paint work hands on. I've had a part in the collision damage repair of somewhere in excess of 12,000 vehicles. After over 20 years in the collision shop I decided to to try my hand at insurance appraising. While having a difficult time obtaining work I started Dean Appraisals in 2008. Dennis Schmidt with Harleysville Insurance made me their staff appraiser as my very 1st account (Thank You Dennis!). I also worked with National independent firms like SCA, Nationwide Appraisals, and The Doan Group to gain experience. In 2010 I began working for MetLife Auto and Home where I learned how to be a real pro. With great managers and mentors there, it was a blessing for me. After 2 years to the day there, I re-opened my firm as Asap Appraisal and it’s still going strong. After performing over 15,000 physical damage appraisals on everything from a compact car to a crane I’ve learned a thing or two. This combined with my collision career, gives me vast experience beyond which either could provide alone. The collision repair industry is under duress from dwindling workforce, out of control technologies on vehicles, supply chain failures and more. There has never been more challenges which requires skilled and experienced appraisers. Shops and insurance companies are naturally at odds and it’s our difficult job to toe a line. One is trying to cut a profit, the other to offer competitive rates and service; hopefully both wanting quality repairs performed in the process. I continue to work independently with impartiality to either side. While I love collision shops and came from one, processing claims and trying to be cost effective and sensible must be part of the process in my view.
