Offender Workforce Development Specialist
CurrentI am currently employed as an Offender Workforce Development Specialist (OWDS) at St. Brides Correctional Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. Each week for six-hours I facilitate workshops on basic verbal and non-verbal communication skills, employability skills, and local resource providers. My groups consist of 25 men who have committed felony crimes and are nearing release back into the Tidewater Area. I also provide individual coaching and counseling for those men interested in career exploration, furthering their education, and obtaining lawful employment. In my individual counseling I use such tools such O*Net Career Explorer, personality and aptitude analyzers, The Virginia Workforce Connect and Virginia Career VIEW websites.Additionally, I have established and maintain an active network of city, state, non-profit and privately-owned resource agencies that offer essential reentry services to the formerly incarcerated. These contacts prove invaluable as we work together to service our clients and, more importantly, change the destructive criminal thinking and behaviors that cost our communities peace of mind and millions of dollars. I truly enjoy and am honored to contribute to public safety by being part of this sincere network of agencies providing essential services that empower our formerly incarcerated citizens to get their personal lives and careers back on track.
