About Deanna Arsala, Ph.D.
I'm an evolutionary-developmental biologist with over a decade of experience in cutting-edge genomics, gene regulation, microscopy, and genome editing technologies. My scientific journey has led me through diverse areas of biology, as I chase interesting biological questions rather than sticking to specific systems. This approach has allowed me to co-author numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, covering research topics ranging from epigenetics and population genetics to developmental biology. I'm a fast learner who excels in tackling complex questions in both familiar and uncharted territories.Currently, I'm an NIH-NRSA postdoctoral fellow at The University of Chicago, where my research revolves around illuminating how intralocus sexual conflict can be a driving force behind the evolution of new genes with fertility-related functions. During my PhD at the University of Illinois (UIC), I uncovered how gene body methylation is essential for the activation of zygotic genes in early embryo development. My research trajectory has allowed me to develop a diverse skill set, including molecular genetics, developmental biology, gene regulation, confocal microscopy, CRISPR, RNA-seq, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, qRT-PCR, embryo manipulation, embryonic microinjection, epigenomics, and functional genomics. I am also proficient in R.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
I am an independent NIH-NRSA postdoctoral research fellow. I use CRISPR/Cas9, RNAi, ancestral sequence reconstruction, transcriptomic approaches to understand how new genes originate and evolve. I currently co-lead as first author three highly collaborative, international research projects and have been a co-author on several additional projects. This has culminated in four manuscripts which have been submitted for peer review and two publications in peer-reviewed journals as a co-author.
Postdoctoral Scholar
Graduate Student Researcher
My thesis project involved characterizing the evolution of early embryonic development and developing the jewel wasp as a model system to study the impacts of gene body methylation and variable ploidy on embryonic development. I was the first author on two independent projects, a co-author on three additional projects, and have been published in five peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, I was fortunate to rotate in a mammalian cell biology and neurobiology lab, which allowed me to harness additional molecular skills. Project 1: The timing of early embryonic events in the haplo‐diploid wasp Nasonia is robust to variable ploidy. Project 2: Dnmt1a is essential for gene body methylation and the regulation of zygotic genome activation in the wasp.
