Profile bio

About Deanna Furlong, M.Ed.

I'm a relentless cheerleader of anyone trying to be their best self. I believe you need diversity in perspective, knowledge, and experience to build brilliant learning solutions, and that staying curious, open, and adaptable is what allows us to grow and excel, both personally and professionally. When I design learning experiences they are always learner-first; regardless of the design methodology (ADDIE, SAM, Rapid, ISD (Dick/Carrey, etc.) I apply, the delivery media I may choose (eLearning, video, instructor-led, webinar, etc.) or the development tools I use (Storyline, Camtasia, Captivate, etc.). As a human-centered ID, understanding my target audience deeply and using learner personas to drive design is a critical part of my process - the best learning experiences begin with empathy.I've used my ID and eLearning development skills across multiple industries, including SaaS, market research, and B2B and B2C software companies - creating exceptional customer education and success solutions makes my heart happy. I've also been on the enterprise L&D side of my discipline, creating curricula to support employees from onboarding to senior leadership roles, and shaping enterprise digital learning strategy. By choice, I've primarily served in IC roles; however, with 20+ years of experience, I've developed a keen strategic mindset for developing education processes, content, and teams. My weird, wonderful, and winding career path has made me a true trans-disciplinarian. I'm well-versed in UX and CX practices and principles, and always incorporate them into the learning experiences I design. I love it when I can design a learning object that's can seamlessly morph into content marketing or a customer engagement tool. And don't tell the other IDs, but sometimes I dream of being part of a Product or Marketing team; the best decisions/solutions are always data-driven. Yes, I have a Master's degree in Instructional Technologies, so I can sling pedagogy and methodologies with the best of them; however, I believe my passion and hands-on experience are more valuable. I use my education to inform my practice, but I'm a novel, adaptive thinker, so I'm unafraid to propose some funky or unconventional ideas if I think they might improve learning 'stickiness' or engagement. I particularly like experimenting with delivery media and I'm happiest when stretching the boundaries of our learning comfort zone. Always excited to chat with like-minded IDs/LXDs and folks in Customer Education and L&D space, so please reach out!
