Thesis: Nutrient dynamics in a short rotation woody coppice biofuel production system in southern Ontario, CanadaThesis Research: Analyzed nutrient cycles during a 3-year harvest rotation period of willow and poplar trees cultivated for biofuel production to determine whether these systems could be grown without the use of fertilizers.• Designed and executed experiments for the collection of nitrogen, carbon, phosphorous, and potassium from atmospheric deposition, leaf litterfall and decomposition, nitrogen mineralization, and yield harvest• Built data collection apparatuses for throughfall, stemflow, and leaf litterfall, and constructed leaf litter decomposition bags for analysis• Collected data for nutrient inputs from atmospheric deposition (throughfall and stemflow), nutrient transfers from leaf litterfall, decomposition and nitrogen mineralization, and nutrient removals from yield harvest• Analyzed inorganic nitrogen using a Technicon AutoAnalyzer II, and analyzed total nitrogen and carbon using LECO Analyzers• Calculated total nutrient budgets from data collected and from previous literature, and statistically analyzed results using IBM SPSS Statistics• Based on data collected and analyzed, provided recommendations to reduce or eliminate fertilization for short rotation woody biofuel production, as there were ample nutrients supplied from within the system.
