75 hours a day. That's the average number of hours students engage in technology and social media. Per day. Every day. "Well, Deano, that's funny because I thought there were 24 hours in a day." I have heard that comment many, many times over the last 10 years I've visited schools across the country to talk to students about their use of technology. And I heard it 15 years before that as a college educator on the topics of media criticism, media literacy, persuasion, and analysis of social media. Students routinely self-report over 100 hours each and every day. When you count access to or interruptions from 5 to 7 technologies, all at the same time, you will see how this is all very possible (and then some). This is what I am passionate about. I help students (and their parents!) understand how much media and technological consumption takes place, how it affects each and every one of us, and design strategies for what to do about it. This includes understanding media bias, detecting and addressing misinformation and disinformation campaigns, and how our mental health and self-image are impacted. I've worked in higher education for 25 years. I now have the privilege of doing what I love full-time. I work with multiple national organizations as a professional speaker, literacy advisor, and communication content specialist. I would love to come to your local middle school, high school, or college; to your local school board, city council, or Rotary meeting; to groups big or small and talk about a topic that affects us all.
