• Assisted Dr. Akemi Kawaguchi’s research on assessing nontechnical skills (e.g. communication, teamwork, leadership, situational awareness) during safety simulations. Collected consent forms, evaluated OR teams, and input data into MS Access database. • Began conducting a systematic review with Dr. Akemi Kawaguchi focusing on safety simulations in pediatric surgery to improve teamwork behavior. Over 2,000 references were evaluated for applicability. Data abstraction was planned for 200 articles.• Planned Pediatric Surgical Safety Checklist Revision Committee meetings with physician and nursing staff and hospital administrators. Created the new checklist for pediatric patients undergoing surgery that is used at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Also created manuals for the checklist.• Conducted semi-structured interviews of hospital staff members to assess perceptions of the surgical safety checklist, what value it holds for patient safety initiatives, and evaluating frontline staff of the hospital's safety culture.• Maintained databases for pediatric patients undergoing an appendectomy. Clinical information abstracted included operative reports, pathology and radiology reports, antibiotics administered, as well as follow-up information.

● Managed internal perioperative reporting system designed to capture adverse safety events, good catches, and near misses. Reported cases were categorized by variance and safety severity and then sent to appropriate managers (PACU, PICU, NICU, ED, OR, operations, etc.).● Maintained study databases and presented data findings in pediatric surgery clinical research via PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. Projects included: quality improvement in surgical ORs to decrease adverse events, improve hospital processes and promote inter-professional communication; enrolling pediatric patients in SICHA (Splenectomy in Congenital Hemolytic Anemia), a multi-institutional registry comparing health outcomes of patients undergoing a partial vs. total splenectomy.● Coordinated various committees for health promotion initiatives such as a hospital-wide hand washing campaign across multiple departments (pediatric surgery, NICU, PICU, infectious diseases) and a safety checklist revision for pediatric surgical patients.● Prepared IRB documents and assisted with answering IRB Committee questions, under the guidance of the PI, for final approval. Completed all study forms, study protocols, and informed consent as needed by principal investigator. Enrolled patients after being identified by the PI and monitored progress according to the study regulations and protocols in databases such as REDCap, iRIS, MS Access, and electronic medical records (Care4, AllScripts).
