He is also a former EMT, having served on a Mountain Search and Rescue team in California. Dean studied experimental psychology at UCLA and earned a B.S. in psychology at BYU, where he also pursued graduate studies in organizational behavior before returning to UCLA for advanced studies in statistics and research methods.
