Dr. Deb (as students refer to her) is Professor Emeritus in the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, who taught in the Interior Design Program (26 years), taught college master’s and doctoral program courses in addition to administrative work with overall 43 years of service to Eastern Michigan University. Her design and research interests involved spaces for special needs populations (aging plus cognitive and physical disabilities) with ADA and Universal Design emphasis. Administrative roles included serving the EMU Graduate School as an associate dean and dean for a total of 14 years plus running the university’s Institutional Review Board for research oversight for six years. During that time, Dr. de Laski-Smith had a year of leading the College of Health and Human Services as interim dean. That year, the university president referred to her as Double Dean Deb. Other administrative roles were the Interim School Director for the School of Visual & Built Environment (VBE) (1 year), then overseeing both VBE and the School of Technology and Professional Services Management (TPSM) (1 year), finishing administration in TPSM for a few years before returning to faculty.The Interior Design Program at EMU is CIDA and NASAD accredited, and Deb assisted with reaccreditation before retiring December 2021.
