Profile bio

About Deb Blankenship

I grew up on The Wizard of Oz. I was entranced by the Wicked Witch of the West, her green face, gestures, and creepy voice. I practiced sounding like her. Then Julie Andrews arrived as Mary Poppins and I began imitating her British accent, and then Audrey Hepburn’s accents in My Fair Lady. Then I saw my first Broadway musical, Hello Dolly, with the incomparable Carol Channing who had a voice that sounded as if she smoked 4 packs of cigarettes a day.So it’s no wonder I studied Theatre, got a Master’s Degree, and lunged full speed into a career as a theatre professor teaching voice and accents to college students with stars in their eyes. My dream job! After years of fumbling from one job to another as a waitress, security officer, receptionist, and HR assistant, I had a career. And I loved it. At least for a while.I loved it but it was hollow. I loved the prestige, the accolades I received, and working with directors and actors to ensure the stage accents were authentic, but there was something missing that I couldn’t put my finger on. What was it? After wracking my brain, I hit on it. It was that elusive “making a difference” that was missing.Making a difference is defined differently by each person. It comes down to values and they are personal. For me it’s how we show up to make the world a better place. Entertaining audiences didn’t meet that value. Burnt out and disillusioned, I resigned after five years. Kaput at age 34.Identity crisis. Now what? Despondent, I floundered again. Who am I? What do I want to do? I became a baker, volunteer coordinator, massage therapist, administrative assistant, recruiter for a temp agency. Back into community college teaching part time for a while. Twenty years go by.Twelve years ago I walked into Workforce Boulder County on a whim. They had workshops. I took a few, they were fabulous, and the trainer said they were looking to hire another trainer. I applied and got the job I have today. The job that fits because it fits that value of “making a difference” in our community. And that, my friend, is everything.
